GAMBLING ADDICTION

Gambling is the wagering of money or something of value( referred to as “the Stakes”) on an event with an uncertain outcome, with the primary intent of winning money or material goods. Gambling thus requires three elements to be present: consideration, risk and prize.

THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF GAMBLING INCLUDES:

1. Chance-based: such as playing the lottery, roulette, bingo or gaming machines. The results are random.

2. Skill-based: such as betting on races and playing poker or blackjack. Your ability or skill can influence whether you win or lose.

A few examples include;

. Lotteries ( lotto 6/49, super 7)

. Instant lotteries ( 7 chanceux, other scratch cards)

. Bingo

. Betting on billiard or pool

. Card games

. Private sports betting/ sports lotteries

. Casino games ( slot machines, roulette, keno)

. Video lottery terminals

WHY DO PEOPLE GAMBLE

For example, slot machine players may gamble to win money, for enjoyment and excitement, to socialize and escape negative feeling. As people progress from social to regular and finally to excessive gambling, there are often significant changes in their reasons for gambling.

WHY DO PEOPLE GET ADDICTED TO GAMBLING?

Addiction occurs because gambling is anew norm. Thus, the individual gets stuck in limbo: they have to keep gambling to stay out of withdrawal and depression, but because of tolerance they do not experience any dopamine- generated euphoria anymore. Excessive gambling is now necessary to stay in their “new-normal”. GAMBLING addiction also known as Pathological GAMBLING, compulsive gambling or gambling disorder is an impulse-control disorder. If you are a compulsive gambler, you cannot control the impulse to gamble, even when it has negative consequences for you or your loved ones.

IS GAMBLING A MENTAL ILLNESS?

Yes, it is. People who gamble compulsively often have substance abuse problems, personality disorders, depression and anxiety. Compulsive gambling may also be associated with bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder or attention deficit.

You might be surprised to learn that compulsive gamblers can suffer from withdrawal. To understand gambling withdrawal, you need to understand the role of brain chemistry and dopamine in gambling addiction. 1. I am recovering gambling addict going on 14-years and the answer to your question depends on WHO you ask…I’m not an active participant in Gamblers Anonymous Defines “What Constitutes Gambling Is?

“GAMBLING, for the compulsive gambler, is defined as follows: ‘Any betting or wagering, for self or others, whether for money or not, no matter how slight or insignificant, where the outcome is uncertain or depends upon chance or ‘skill’ constitutes gambling.’ Even just a flip of a coin is gambling.

I feel there are THREE MAJOR Factors to know if you are an addicted gambler…

ONE, are you spending money you don’t have?
TWO, have you lost control of your gambling. By this, I mean, do win and then spend it and play it all back?
And Third, is your gambling making areas in your life unmanageable? Like your job, relationships, spending all your free time gambling instead of with family or loved ones?

I knew when this began happening in my life with my addicted gambling? I knew I needed help!
      I blog about gambling too… https://BetFreeRecoveryNow.wordpress.com “-)
